The Power of Argumentative PapersAll students want to excel in the classroom, but many of them struggle with classroom argument skills. In this article I want to discuss how you can use argumentative papers as a way to improve your overall debate or essay skills.
One of the first things you must do to improve your classroom argument skills is to set up your paper or essay the right way. This does not mean you can't be creative, but you should first establish your facts and point of view before putting words to them. In order to have a good argument for a paper you must develop your facts and convincing arguments. Without both, you will find yourself on the losing end of your topic. A real world example for this would be the use of one word in a paragraph. To put your information in its proper context, that is, a way that fits within the topic you are writing about, you should use the subject headings in place of a subject line. Using a subject head is important because it shows that the piece is an opinion piece rather than just a factual piece. It helps establish your position and has something that students can relate to. When you have a strong topic you should make sure your argument is short and easy to understand. Even if you have someone in the class that knows the topic you need to make sure you stick to the topic and do not bore them with a lengthy lecture. By keeping your paper short, interesting and easy to understand you will not only have a good argument but you will also be remembered as a student that excels in the classroom. I know it can be frustrating for students who are constantly being told how boring their writing is or how they should be writing their own notes. However, by keeping the type of writing simple, straight forward and concise, you will be able to prove to them that you are really an intelligent student. In order to make sure your argument is always 100% factual information, you should do some research. Sure, you may have an opinion, but you should be able to back it up with some supporting evidence that the other person doesn't already know. You should be able to show them the facts in the piece that is supported by those supporting facts. In order to make sure you do not go overboard in your arguments, you should only use one word or short sentence in your argument and make sure you always have the right amount of information. By giving each speaker the proper amount of time they should be able to speak up. Don't take up all of their time. Finally, when you are trying to convince your students that you know more than they do, be sure you let them know that you are passionate about the subject matter and want to help them. By doing this you will have people listening to you and agreeing with you, but only if you prove it. By focusing on proof, you will allow others to listen to you without any suspicion.
